Seminar - Brothers and Sisters of the East: Who are Your Heroes?

Dr. Rose Borunda, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Counselor Education at California State University, Sacramento, made the trip across Turtle Island to engage in an interactive dialogue session with students and faculty of North Carolina State University. She came with a question grounded in her research which, to date, has been introduced to students in Northern California as well as to students and faculty at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her exploration of “Heroification” and its impact on our value acquisition, identity development and cross racial perceptions are at the forefront of her curriculum. She sought to uncover from our evolving consciousness the interrelatedness of mindful selection of heroes and how such models inform our chosen professions.

Seminar - Media Literacy and the Environment: Understanding our Relationship through a Critical Lens
Iris Metzgen-Ohlswager-presenter. Our educational landscape is dramatically changing; youth and adults have access to more information than ever before. We are exposed daily to hundreds of media messages that influence our beliefs, values, behaviors, and prejudices. As a world we have embraced technology with open arms, but rarely have reflected on its implications or actively educated people on how to deconstruct the endless stream of messages. Media literacy or the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms, can be used as an inquiry-based framework for exploring desocialization in the classroom, community, or workplace. This presentation focused specifically on how media have promoted overconsumption resulting in environmental degradation and adisposable attitude towardour planet.
