A message from Dean Brown

I am delighted that you have shown an interest in the North Carolina State University College of Natural Resources.

The overriding question addressed by all of the programs in the College is: How can we utilize our natural resources in ways that are both environmentally and economically sustainable? Finding answers to this question will become increasingly important as our population increases, putting enormous pressures on our forests, wildlife, water and other natural resources. Frankly, I cannot think of a more important issue facing our society today. It is certainly one that will be with us for a long time.

Our faculty and students deal with this central question from a variety of perspectives. Some focus on the sustainable management of forests, wildlife and fisheries.  At the other end of the spectrum, some students are more interested in engineering-oriented professions and in the manufacturing of essential products like lumber, paper, or bio-fuels. Yet others are interested in eco-tourism and in managing parks, golf courses, or resorts. From these widely different interest areas, all are concerned with the economic and environmental sustainability of our precious natural resources.

As you will learn from this web site, the College of Natural Resources is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. Roughly 1100 students, both graduate and undergraduate, are enrolled in its three departments: Forestry & Environmental Resources; Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management; and Wood and Paper Science. Our students are taught by an internationally-acclaimed faculty, who work in modern, technologically advanced classrooms, laboratories, pilot plants, and field facilities.
Even though the faculty members have international reputations in their specific areas of expertise, they all have one important trait in common - they really care about our students. This is a defining characteristic of the College of Natural Resources.

The College is fortunate to be able to offer numerous scholarships, opportunities for international travel and study, and internships & discipline-related summer jobs for many of our students. A large number of research and teaching graduate assistantships are available each year..

I hope you will spend a little time exploring our web site. More importantly, I invite you to visit us so that we can extend a personal welcome to North Carolina State University and to the College of Natural Resources. In the meantime, please feel free to call (919) 515-2883 at any time if you would like more information about our College.
We look forward to hearing from you.
