Bio

Lucian A. Lucia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University who has studied a wide variety of fundamental chemistry and material engineering questions surrounding renewables (principally wood)-based polymers over the last 6 years. He received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Florida in 1996 for work that modeled the energy-storage events occurring in plant photosynthesis by employing novel Rhenium (I)-based organometallic ensembles.

He began his professional career as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology at the Georgia Institute of Technology examining singlet oxygen's basic interaction with lignin & cellulose (wood pulp) as a component in a broad array of wood pulp oxidation mechanisms.

A large part of his recent work has been focused on understanding the chemistry of wood pulping processes, specifically on hydrosulfide chemistry. He is currently completing a major US Department of Energy-sponsored MeadWestvaco (Evedale, TX) pulping trial that has been introducting a high sulfidity impregnation phase. The mill has shown appreciable enhancement in pulping dynamics, but is currently facing increased rejects and scaling which are being addressed currently. A solution is expected by the end of this year (2012).

He teaches Forest Biomaterials Chemistry (WPS 723), co-teaches Wood Anatomy & Chemistry(WPS 702), co-teaches Forest Ecosystems Services, From Papyrus to Plasma Screens: Paper & Society, and Green Chemistry (in development).

He has co-founded and co-edits an open-access international research journal, BioResources, that is dedicated to original research articles, reviews, and editorials on advanced applications of lignocellulosics.
