Description:
Clemson Universityâs Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science located in Georgetown, South Carolina seeks to fill its Director position beginning Fall 2012. Under a long-term agreement with the Belle W. Baruch Foundation, the Institute is located on the 17,500-acre Hobcaw Barony at the southern end of the Waccamaw Neck and is just 35 miles south of Myrtle Beach and 60 miles north of Charleston. Hobcaw Barony is located on the Atlantic Ocean, bordered by Winyah Bay and North Inlet Estuary. The Institute is housed in a new 12,000 sq. ft. LEED-certified office building with an adjoining 7,000 sq. ft. laboratory and support facility and a soon-to-constructed temporary housing facility for visiting students and scientists. Candidates for this position must have a PhD in forestry, forest science, natural resources, or similar discipline. At least 5 years of relevant experience in a management/leadership role, in particular leading a collaborative multi-staff office, is preferred. A proven research record demonstrated by successful grantsmanship, graduate student supervision, and strong record of peer-reviewed publications is required. Experience in university administration or governance is preferred. Experience and understanding of the university land-grant system is necessary. The Instituteâs Resident Director will be responsible for the daily operation and management of the Institute. This includes direct supervision of the support staff, budget oversight, facilities operation, and working with faculty to develop research and education programs that build on the Instituteâs strengths toward improving our understanding of the form and function of coastal ecosystems leading to sustainable ecosystem management. The Institute Director will also serve as the Executive Director of the Wallace F. Pate Foundation for Environmental Research and Education, a subsidiary of the Clemson University Foundation. The Pate Foundation is responsible for oversight of a 700 acre forested property within the DeBordieu residential development adjoining Hobcaw Barony. The Director also serves as liaison to the Baruch Foundation Board of Trustees and will report directly to the Vice President of Economic Development. The Director must meet the requirements for a faculty appointment as a Professor with tenure in the School of Agricultural, Forest, and Environmental Sciences. The position is a 60% administration and 40% research position, with some leeway in appointment allocation. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
