Academics

FER Home : Academics

FER offers both undergradute and graduate level academic programs in a variety of areas related to forestry and natural resource management.

Our Undergraduate offerings include seven distinct degree programs, with Forest Management, Fisheries & Wildlife Science and Environmental Technology among the most popoular.

Graduate students can pursue advance study in a number of specialty areas related to forestry, natural resources or fisheries and wildlife science.

FER also allows undergraduates to combine an FER program with one available in another college for a double major, or to obtain a minor in many FER areas.

Most of our academic programs are interdisciplinary and touch on aspects of all of our interest areas, including:

Additional courses often draw from the expertise of other colleges to give FER students a grounding in related business, economic and biological topics.

FER's teaching philosophy incorporates classroom instruction with practical work: all FER students work in the field and in laboratories on real-life projects as part of their academic experience.

FER also offers on-going programs and seminars for industry professionals, landowners and the general public through our Extension & Outreach initiatives.

Promo Area

Academics at NC State is about more than just classroom instruction. FER students are encouraged to broaden their perspectives and extend their practical knowledge by taking advantage of numerous fieldwork opportunities, internships and trips abroad. For example, in March 2007, students were offered the chance to join in a Spring Break Chile Forestry Study Tour. Participants saw forest industry production taking place at plantations, sawmills and nurseries near Pucon, Chile (shown above), and learned about the culture of production-based forestry in central-south Chile from an industry, academic and family forestry perspective. Both undergraduates and graduate students participated, earning credit for World Forestry (undergraduates) or Field Practicum (graduate students).
