Student Support

FER Home : Academics : Student Support

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources (FER) is an ideal environment for students who want to learn quickly, put theory into action and learn from a highly supportive and well-respected faculty. Our programs emphasize practical, hands-on learning more than most other colleges and our extensive financial aid program makes it possible for most students to attend NC State without worries about financial aid.

All FER undergraduates are assigned a professor in their field of study as a Faculty advisor. This advisor provides assistance in tailoring a program of study to each student’s personal interests and abilities. Graduate students are asked to find a faculty advisor as part of their application process, although a new advisor may be selected as interests or personal contacts evolve. All students have the opportunity to evaluate their advisors annually, and are also asked for formal feedback on each course they take.

In addition, there are a number of ways for FER students to get support from their peers, including free tutoring for CNR students and an Ambassador Program that pairs freshmen and sophomores with upperclassmen peer advsiors who can ease the transition to college life. Student organizations associated with specific interest areas provide additional academic and career guidance as well as social opportunities.

Please visit our Undergraduate Support or Graduate Student Support sections for more information on how FER helps students make the most of their NC State experience. These services are in addition to CNR student programs and programs available through NC State Student Services.

Financial Aid

Financial support at NC State is administered through a number of University Financial Aid programs, and there are also scholarships and work-study opportunities that exist solely for the use of College of Natural Resource or FER students. Please visit our Undergraduate Financial Aid or Graduate Financial Aid sections for more information on these.

Promo Area

There are many, many recreational and support services offered by FER, the College of Natural Resources and the University itself. Taking advantage of these opportunities helps FER students lead healthy, balanced lives — helping them to perform better in the classroom and out in the field.
