This position is located with the U.S. Forest Service, Southern Research Station's Center for Watershed Science Research located in New Ellenton, SC. Primary research is developing bioenergy production systems and understanding potential environmental consequences of these production systems.

Incumbent would assist in the establishment, maintenance, monitoring, and measurements involving bioenergy production systems and understanding the potential environmental consequences. Duties would involve routine activities including herbicide applications, insect control measures, fertilization, etc. Monitoring and measurements can involve working with in-situ data logging devices that may monitor weather conditions or soil environmental variables such as temperature or water content. Measurements may involve collection of soil and plant variables ranging from heights and diameters to more complex measurements such as leaf area indices, crown assessments, or below ground rooting assessments.

In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as follows:

GS-06:

--Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

OR

--One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level.

-- Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION:

Specialized experience directly related to this position should be documented in your application. GS-06:

For the purposes of this vacancy announcement, specialized experience is further defined as experience assisting crews by using botanical techniques to take soil and vegetation samples, which included taking measurements above and below ground level from plant components. Performing biological support assignments, including collecting, observing, and taking measurements of soil or vegetation samples or compiling information of biological test results to prepare draft reports used in biomass research studies.

GS-07:

For the purposes of this vacancy announcement, specialized experience is further defined as experience collecting complex soil and root measurements and samples from plant habitats taken above and below ground level; assisting in analyzing data using statistical programs to prepare summary analysis reports, which included creating various charts, graphs, or diagrams. Participating in plant field studies, which required determining proper sampling methods, conducting ecology invitations and data collections to determine proper vegetation treatment responses.
