FER Home : The Department
NC State’s Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources (FER) is one of the oldest and largest schools of its kind in America. We are committed to promoting the science and practice of modern forestry as well as state-of-the-art environmental resource management.
We are distinguished by a long history of innovation, an exceptional faculty, outstanding learning facilities, a commitment to research and extension plus an ability to educate students in all sectors of forestry and environmental science. We are proud to have graduated many of today's most prominent forestry and environmental policy makers, researchers, scientists, executives, field experts and academic leaders.
Our primary interest areas currently include:
- Conservation & Restoration
- Environmental Impact Assessment
- Environmental Technology
- Fisheries & Wildlife Sciences
- Forest Ecology & Management
- Forest Genetics & Biotechnology
- Geographic Information Science
- Natural Resource Economics & Policy
- Natural Resource Management
- Watershed Hydrology
However, our activities are not limited to these areas. FER often works on a cross-disciplinary basis with other departments within the College of Natural Resources (CNR) or other colleges at NC State to address how people, communities and enterprises can nurture their forests and other natural resources in a way that is both environmentally and economically sustainable.
Academics
FER offers a wealth of Academic Programs. All FER students work in the field or lab and participate in research or outreach programs as part of their learning experience. Our integrated approach to teaching, research and extension allows students to work side-by-side with academic and industry professionals on real-life challenges.
Faculty
Because we have been on the forefront of forestry and natural resource management for over 75 years, FER has accumulated an archive of knowledge in these fields that few colleges can match. This strength shows in the FER Faculty, which includes leading experts in pine silviculture, forest genetics, biotechnology, wildlife management, forest policies and economics and more. Our faculty also includes internationally-recognized researchers and winners of the Wallenberg Prize, National Academy of Science honors and various teaching excellence awards from the academic community. Virtually all full-time faculty participate in teaching and research.
Research
Our Research capabilities are acknowledged around the world. In fact, FER has been responsible for many of the most important forestry and natural resource breakthrough of the past century. Our research project teams are cross-disciplinary and are often comprised of experts from a variety of fields within FER, the broader College of Natural Resources, other colleges at NC State and representatives from government agencies, the private sector, industry or other universities.
Extension & Outreach
Because NC State is a land grant university, one of FER’s most important responsibilities is to disseminate knowledge to the people and communities of North Carolina through Extension & Outreach Services. Our many outreach programs cover forestry practices, wildlife management, fisheries and aquatics, natural resource management and environmental sciences.
International Activities
FER’s International Activities take place in virtually every region of the world, either through field trials, research initiatives, training and exchange programs or partnerships with industry leaders and other universities. These efforts create a variety of international study and fieldwork opportunities for NC State students and FER faculty.
