James Goodwin Forest

FER Home : The Department : James Goodwin Forest

Our James Goodwin Forest in Moore County near Carthage, NC includes 1,169 acres formerly used as cotton fields and rundown woodlots. The forest was restored by its prior owner, James L. Goodwin, who was a trained forester from Yale University. Goodwin planted open lands with pine seedlings and succeeded in reforesting the area — as different historical photos of the property show.

Several creeks run through the property. Hikers are welcome to use the area, as Goodwin indicated when he bequeathed the property to NC State University in 1968. This forest is one of several that have been left to the Department of Forestry and Envronmental Resources over the years. For information on donating land to the University, please visit our Alumni & Friends section.
