For those of you traveling from other cities we will meet you in either in Detroit/Minneapolis or in Jackson Hole. Please arrive at your respective airports no later than two hours prior to your scheduled departure time. Upon arrival, we will head into Grand Teton National Park to check into our accommodations at the Signal Mountain Lodge. We will be staying in cabins along the shore of Jackson Lake. Dinner tonight will be at the Signal Mountain Lodge. (D) Day 2) Saturday, September 27: Grand Teton National Park Today we will begin our exploration of Grand Teton NP with the sunrise over Oxbow Bend and hiking in the northern section of the Park. The trails near Oxbow Bend and Swan Lake are prime habitat for moose, beaver and many species of birds including white pelicans. We will have a picnic lunch at the String Lake Trailhead and after lunch hike the String Lake Trail for great views of the Tetons. We will overnight at Colter Bay Village. (B,L,D) Day 3) Sunday, September 28: Rafting the Snake River and Grand Teton National Park After breakfast we will transfer to our raft launch for our morning raft trip down the Snake River. Our 10 to 14-mile float trip is one of the best ways to view the abundant wildlife and fantastic scenery of the Grand Tetons. After lunch we will continue to explore Grand Teton NP hiking more trails in search of wildlife. With luck we should see elk, black bear and perhaps pronghorn and sage grouse among the sagebrush of the valley floor. Dinner tonight will be special as we dine in the famous Mural Room in the Jackson Lake Lodge. The Mural Room is famous for its great food and its incredibly huge windows facing across the lake to the mountains. Once again we will overnight at Colter Bay Village. (B,L,D) Day 4) Monday, September 29: Yellowstone NP: Upper Geyser Basin and Old Faithful After an early breakfast we will depart for Yellowstone NP. Established in 1872, Yellowstone is our first US national park and to this day is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in North America. It is also famous for its thermal activity as the land is riddled with craters, geysers, boiling mud pots and hot springs. We will begin our Yellowstone adventure with a visit to one of its most famous landmarks - Old Faithful Geyser. After the eruption we will hike along the Upper Geyser Basin. Crossing the Firehole River several times we will pass dozens of boiling springs, delicate mineral formations, perhaps more geyser eruptions and end up at Morning Glory Pool. Wildlife is also plentiful in this portion of the park especially mule deer, elk and bison. After lunch we will continue to explore the area perhaps even getting to the Midway and Lower Geyser Basins. Tonight we will stay at Grant Village Hotel in Yellowstone. (B,L,D) Day 5) Tuesday, September 30: Yellowstone: Midway and Lower Geyser Basins, Madison River and north to Mammoth Hot Springs After another early breakfast we will head north and visit the Midway and Lower Geyser Basins. The delicate terraces of the Grand Prismatic Spring, hopefully the eruption of Great Fountain Geyser and the bubbling, spitting, reddish-pink cauldron of Fountain Paint Pot will be among the highlights. We hope to have lunch along the Madison River, which is famous for trumpeter swans, bald eagles and bison. After lunch we will continue north stopping at the Norris Geyser Basin for the Echinus Geyser eruption, the steaming fumaroles of Roaring Mountain and the Obsidian Cliff. North of the Obsidian Cliff we should keep a look out for pronghorn and bighorn sheep on the cliffs as we head into Mammoth Hot Springs. After viewing the hot springs we will drive to our overnight accommodations at the Best Western by Mammoth Springs Hotel just outside the National Park in Gardiner, Montana. (B,L,D) Day 6) Wednesday, October 1: Mammoth Hot Springs to Roosevelt Today we head east into the best part of Yellowstone for wildlife, the Tower/Roosevelt area and the Lamar Valley. We will spend three full days in this area searching for Yellowstone’s wolves, grizzly and black bear, moose, elk, deer, bison, pronghorn, bighorn sheep and maybe even mountain goats. We will start by exploring Petrified Tree, an area good for black bear, moose and golden eagles. We will also hike the Yellowstone River and Slough Creek Trails. In the late afternoon we will head east into the Lamar Valley in search of wolves. The area between the Yellowstone Institute and Soda Butte is home territory for Yellowstone’s most famous wolf pack the Druid pack. We will overnight in cabins at the Roosevelt Lodge. (B,L,D) Day 7) Thursday, October 2: Yellowstone: The Lamar Valley and the Beartooth Mountains in Montana We will depart early today as we journey through the Lamar Valley, again in search of wolves and other wildlife. We will continue east and leave Yellowstone to explore the Beartooth Mountains of Montana. Hopefully we will meet wildlife photographers Dan and Cindy Hartman in Silver Gate, Montana, take a tour of their gallery and have them join us as we search for high altitude wildlife such as mountain goats, pika and grizzlies. The Hartman’s are also owl fans and we hope they will know a location to look for great gray owls. After dinner at the Log Cabin Cafщ in Silver Gate we will head back to our cabins at Roosevelt. (B,L,D) Day 8) Friday, October 3: Yellowstone: The Lamar Valley We have an additional day in the Lamar Valley area in order to maximize our chances to see wildlife. We will spend the morning driving the Lamar Valley and the rest of the day exploring and hiking. We will hike the Pebble Creek Trail, which is great for wildlife including dippers in the creek and maybe mountain goats as we near Baronette Peak. We will overnight at the cabins at Roosevelt. (B,L,D) Day 9) Saturday, October 4: Yellowstone: Tower/Roosevelt to Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and on to Yellowstone Lake Today we will depart early and drive south through the Hayden Valley. This Valley is a great spot for wildlife especially grizzlies, white pelicans, trumpeter swans, bison and bighorn sheep near Mt. Washburn. We will continue south to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone for spectacular views of the Yellowstone River’s Upper and Lower Falls. Lower Falls is 308 feet high and is one of the most photographed sites in the park. At the Fishing Bridge we will try to see cutthroat trout in the Yellowstone River before it dumps into Yellowstone Lake. Yellowstone Lake is the largest high altitude lake in the US and we will stay along its shore tonight in the frontier cabins of the Lake Yellowstone Lodge. (B,L,D) Day 10) Sunday, October 5: Yellowstone to Jackson Hole and home to Raleigh We have an early morning flight, so after a very early breakfast we will depart for Jackson Hole for our flight back to Raleigh.
