Organizations

FER Home : Forest Genetics & Biotechnology : Organizations

FER students and faculty are active in a number of peer and industry organizations that include genetics or biotechnology as part of their focus.

Visiting the websites of these organizations can give you a better idea of how involved FER students and faculty are in spreading the word about forest genetics and biotechnology, as well as provide you with more information on the latest applications of advancements in this field:

The National Center for Biotechnology Information is a national resource for molecular biology information. NCBI creates public databases, conducts research in computational biology, develops software tools for analyzing genome data and disseminates biomedical information — all for the better understanding of molecular processes affecting human health and disease.

CropBiotech Net is the home of the Global Knowledge Center on Crop Biotechnology (KC). KC is the information-sharing initiative of ISAAA, a not-for-profit organization that delivers the benefits of new agricultural biotechnologies to farmers in developing countries for poverty alleviation.

The American Chestnut Foundation is seeking to restore the American chestnut tree to its native range within the woodlands of the eastern United States, using a scientific research and breeding program developed by its founders. A blight-resistant American chestnut tree is expected to be ready for forest test-planting in 2006 and for wider distribution within the next decade.

The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) supports sound natural resource management of tropical ecosystems through environmental outreach, environmental policy courses, reforestation research and the protection, investigation and management of buffer areas in field research stations.

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is a national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. Its mission is to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry.

Sigma Xi is an international, multidisciplinary research society that honors scientific achievement, promotes an appreciation of the role research has played in human progress and supports scientific enterprise and original work across the spectrum of science and technology. There are nearly 65,000 Sigma Xi members in more than 100 countries around the world.

The North Carolina Urban Forest Council is a grassroots organization devoted to the protection and growth of community forestry. Members include individuals, citizen groups, non-profit organizations, businesses and agencies from around the state with an interest in community and urban forestry. The Council helps communities strengthen the efforts of local groups by serving as a knowledge resource,
