Extension Programs

FER Home : Geographic Information Science : Extension Programs

Our GIS area shares its knowledge of geographic information science with industry professionals, private citizens of all ages and local governments through various extension programs. These outreach efforts help fulfill NC State’s land grant mission of educating the people and communities of North Carolina.

For example, NC State sponsors a variety of GIS outreach programs that educate children from kindergarten age all the way through to 12th grade. Thousands of public school students have learned about GIS technologies through this program, as well as over 100 teachers. GIS also provides economic planning assistance to a number of North Carolina counties via NC State's broader extension efforts.

Our GIS area also often works with outside agencies on engagement programs, including the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, the US Environmental Protection Agency, Advantage West North Carolina and the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Please visit the teaching, research, faculty, and facilities pages of NC State’s GIS Program to learn more about the University’s overall GIS extension activities.

Contributing Expertise

In addition to programs centered on GIS topics, our GIS area contributes service and expertise to the following broader extension programs sponsored by FER or the College of Natural Resources:

NC State Wildlife Extension provides citizens with information on wildlife identification, enhancement and damage control plus fisheries and aquatics advice. It also sponsors a variety of environmental education and wildlife protection programs and offers both general information and certification classes in many areas.

Extension Forestry provides technical assistance, offers educational programs for adults and children, collates and desimminates research results and offers many other useful resources to all North Carolina citizens involved in forestry, including programs centered around wildlife management. Services are provide through N.C.’s 100 County Extension Centers as well as the Cherokee Indian Reservation Center.

FER’s Forestry & Environmental Outreach Program offers courses, workshops, conferences and seminars involving management issues for forestry and natural resource professionals on both a non-credit and continuing education credit basis. It also educates the general public, professionals, landowners, public and private land managers.

Project Learning Tree Project (PLT) is an award-winning environmental education program designed for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. It offers workshops and in-service programs for teachers, environmental educators and youth leaders.
