The GIS faculty group within the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources is led by Siamak Khorram and includes Heather Cheshire, Stacy Nelson and George Hess. The founder of NC State’s GIS program, Hugh Devine, is a joint faculty member of FER and its sister department, Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. He also serves as Assistant Director of GIS in the Center for Earth Observation.
Many other faculty in FER utilize GIS technologies in their teaching and research activities. Please visit our FER Faculty section for more information.
The efforts of FER faculty are augmented by GIS experts from a number of different NC State colleges and departments who serve on the Geographic Information Science Faculty. This group was created in 1998 by the Graduate School to advise on GIS curriculum and program development issues in all NC State colleges offering GIS programs. Membership is open to all graduate faculty and currently includes faculty from 20 different departments or units from eight different colleges as well as advisory members from various research and administrative units.
