International Partnerships

The Department of Forestry & Environmental Resources (FER) maintains partnerships with organizations and universities around the world. These relationships increase our academic and study abroad offerings while enhancing the breadth and quality of our research capabilities.
Over the years, the many international activities of FER's faculty have led to our growing worldwide presence. Some of these partnerships involve informal exchanges of information among colleagues or smaller joint research alliances. Others are formal arrangements with global organizations such as the Peace Corps or on-going worldwide cooperatives as described in our International Research & Extension area.
In addition to these research and service partnerships, FER also maintains ties with several universities worldwide. Reciprocal arrangements between NC State and these partners provide students with global academic options and Study Abroad opportunities while also extending our international research capabilities.
One of our most important academic partnerships is with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), which operates main campuses in Alnarp, Skara, Uppsala and Umeå, Sweden. SLU is a world-renowned institution whose ground-breaking research in forestry and natural resources has provided NC State with a rich source of knowledge over the years. The NC State/SLU partnership has been significantly enhanced by the generosity of the Gunnar and Lillian Nicholson Faculty Exchange Fund, which supports cross-country visits between the two faculties and affiliated organizations in Sweden and also funds fellowships for PhD candidates.
In addition to SLU, FER maintains academic partnerships with the following universities:
University of the Sunshine Coast, located in Queensland, Australia. USC is one of the fastest growing universities in Australia and is particularly well-known for its commitmemt to environmental redsearch. Its coastal facilities provide NC State students abroad with a living laboratory ideal for studying for marine ecology and other environmental topics.
The Universidad de Concepcion in Chile. The agreement between NCSU and Universidad de Concepción involves faculty, technical and student exchanges, joint research projects, expected joint and dual degrees over time, and collaboration and facilitaton of both NCSU's and UdeC's development. The Chile Forest Resources Exhange Program offers funding for both students and faculty.
Five universities in China, including the country's top three universities. This recent agreement will provide study abroad opportunities for NC State students, generate research initiatives and offer access to resources that could well redefine international education at NC State — creating new avenues for graduates to compete globally and offering the people and companies of North Carolina new opportunities for links to an emerging economy. Many NC State University administration are now traveling in China as part of this agreement and posting to an online journal. University of Rome, the Fisheries and Wildlife Program has an option to minor in Italian at NC State and take a semester of wildlife and biology courses at the University of Rome studying with Dr. Luigi Boitani. The Italian minor includes a month in Summer studying the Italian language in Perugia, Italy, and taking Italian foreign language and culture courses at NC State. The semester-long courses in wildlife and conservation biology would be a ninth semester to complete coursework for a Bachelor Degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences.
