Natural Resources Management
FER Home : Natural Resources Management
As our knowledge about natural resources and the effects of human behavior on them has grown, our understanding of how these factors affect our environment has deepened dramatically. Today, we know that effective natural resource management involves a working knowledge of many disciplines, ranging from the most basic biological sciences to practical math and engineering skills, computer technology, psychology, business management, public policy, economics and more.
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources (FER) is meeting the challenges of modern natural resource management with a multi-disciplinary program that combines science, economics and policy with an understanding of human behavior, natural resources and ecosystems.
Through this program, NC State is educating the leaders of tomorrow in natural resources management, uncovering new advancements through original research, instructing industry professional and private citizens on their obligations and opportunities in this area and serving as an information and program partner for a host of government agencies. These activities are also helping to enhance practices in natural resource management around the globe, as well as leading to practical improvements in the fields of forestry, wildlife management, parks and recreation, urban planning and more.
Working In Partnership
In conducting our natural resource management activities, we often collaborate with other areas within the College of Natural Resources and work with other departments at NC State that focus on aspects of soil, agriculture and veterinarian sciences, engineering, botany, public administration and policy and economics. If a project or academic program involves policy-related issues, faculty from the Public Administration and Political Science programs at both NC State and Duke University may be involved. Our work also brings us into frequent contact with local and state environmental management agencies, environmental companies and a variety of non-profit agencies.
Through these many joint initiatives, we not only uncover and bring new knowledge about natural resource management to the people of North Carolina and beyond, we also provide faculty with a window on developments in this field and students with hands-on opportunities to hone their natural resource management skills in real-world situations.
