Fish and Wildlife Seminars Spring 2009

February 11, 2009 – Fisheries Management on the Roanoke River

Dr. Joe Hightower, of the North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at N.C. State University, will lead a program highlighting the latest fisheries research and management on the Roanoke River. He will be joined by Bob Graham of Dominion, a power company in Richmond, Va.  Topics will include recreational fishing on the river, hydro-acoustic estimates of run size, monitoring of the spawning stock at Weldon, and fish passage work on the American shad and eel .

March 11, 2009 – Hunting Matters!

Walter “Deet” James, the state’s hunting heritage biologist with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, will discuss the Hunting Heritage Program and the reasons for its inception.  He will cover a brief history of hunting and wildlife conservation, including an introduction to the North American model of conservation, as well as the concept of hunting in modern society.

April 8, 2009 – Wildlife Conservation in an Urbanizing North Carolina

Jacquelyn Wallace, an urban wildlife biologist with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, will lead the program. She will discuss the impacts of urbanization on wildlife, the challenges and opportunities that urbanization presents, and how the Commission and its partners are addressing urban wildlife issues. Seminar participants will learn about the Green Growth Toolbox, a wildlife-friendly development certification program, and other techniques used to help conserve wildlife habitats in areas where human population is growing rapidly.

April 17, 2009 - Frederick and Joan Barkalow Distinguished Conservationist Lecture

"Natural History of Polar Bears" - Ian Stirling
Lecture 4-5PM. Room 1216 Jordan Hall, NCSU Campus, Refreshments 3:30PM

Ian Stirling is an Emeritus Research Scientist with the Canadian Wildlife Service and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton. He has done research on polar bears and polar seals (Arctic and Antarctic) for 39 years, particularly in the areas of ecology, behaviour, evolution, relationships between polar bears and seals, the biological importance of polynyas, and the conservation and management of polar marine mammals and ecosystems. For his work, he has won several awards including the Northern Science Award, being made an Officer in the Order of Canada, and being elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He participates in a number of national and international committees on polar bears and marine mammals and has authored or co-authored over 200 scientific articles and 3 books.
