Vision

FER Home : Watershed Hydrology : Vision

Our mission is to advance scientifically-based conservation, management and use of water resources on all levels, from basic assessment of hydrological processes and water quality to broader issues involving water management, public policy and land use.

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources intends to remain a leader in providing a broad-based, practical education in water resources and to maintain our reputation for offering a flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum that includes new scientific breakthroughs and state-of-the-art technical options. To this end, we will keep in constant touch with other areas at NC State whose activities overlap with ours and constantly refresh our academic programs to incorporate new breakthroughs and emphasize timely topics.

We will also broaden our activities to promote the practical applications of improved watershed management, and increase our participation in research, policy development and extension education so that we play an even more active role in advocating responsible land use and encouraging practices that minimize the impact of human behavior on water quality. Our goal is to strengthen the public and industry’s overall knowledge about practical watershed management applications and to uncover additional applications with demonstrable benefits for the world’s waters.

Another area of focus going forward will be broadening our knowledge of storm water management issues and developing best management practices in this area. We intend to be at the forefront of efforts to protect our water resources on both a local and global level against damage from changing climate patterns.
