Academic Offerings
FER Home : Geographic Information Science : Academic Offerings
Our GIS-related academic programs include undergraduate classes, a graduate program, the first officially-sanctioned Graduate School Certificate on campus, a multidisciplinary Graduate GIS Faculty — and the leading GIS library program in the country.
A variey of specialty courses and degree options allow FER students to hone their GIS skills:
FER’s undergraduate program curriculum in GIS is designed to show students how technology can significantly enhance natural resource management and virtually all of its subspecialities. Keep in mind that because GIS technologies now play an important part in all forestry and environmental resource areas, all undergraduates at FER, regardless of their majors, are exposed to GIS principles and techniques through one or more of their courses.
FER’s graduate degree programs allow students to combine a technical option in Spatial Information Systems with either a Master of Science in Natural Resources or a Master of Natural Resources degree. In addition, a number of degrees allow students to choose a minor in Geographic Information Systems or Environmental Remote Sensing and Image Analysis.
The GIS graduate program focuses on resource management and modeling with an emphasis on the application of spatial technologies to natural resource management problems.
A National Leader
Our GIS academic programs are significantly enriched by the NC State University Library, which is a national leader in the provision of campus and community GIS data services and training. Our programs also benefit from NC State’s Information Technology Division — which is one of the largest distribution networks of GIS software in the world — as well as from the University's acknowledged expertise in statistics, computer science and public administration.
