Would you like to help control or monitor pollution? Are you interested in a career in environmental health? Do you enjoy working independently and solving difficult puzzles? Would you like a field job as an environmental detective, or as a professional in a field that transcends the boundaries of traditional engineering and scientific disciplines? If so, Environmental Technology may be right for you.
Environmental Technology is a science-based field that requires an understanding of environmental policy and regulations, proficiency in hazardous materials management and a grasp of the principles behind environmental management systems. FER’s program in Environmental Technology integrates a study of these topics as well as a grounding in the sciences behind the biological and chemical mechanisms of environmental processes. It also includes an exploration of the principles behind environmental monitoring, assessment, management and communications.
This is a very hands-on field of study that includes multiple opportunities to work in the field and to participate in faculty-sponsored research projects into new techniques and procedures within the field of environmental technology.
Curriculum
The Environmental Technology curriculum focuses on hands-on experience. Students learn to monitor, analyze, assess and communicate environmental changes in air, water, soil/sediment, flora and fauna. Students are also required to complete an internship in the environmental field. The curriculum also includes technical instruction designed to enable students to satisfy ISO 14001 standards and to receive both their 40 hr. HAZWOPER certification and Manager in Training (MIT) certification in Hazardous Materials Management.

Career Possibilities
Because virtually every industry, community and municipality in the country is subject to environmental regulation, FER’s Environmental Technology graduates typically have a number of employment opportunities available to them.
You might obtain a job with an environmental consulting firm; county, state or federal agency; university or government research office; environmental analytical laboratory; or with an industrial company as an environmental scientist.
Demand for Environmental Technology graduates is increasing particularly quickly in the areas of hazardous waste control, solid waste recycling, non-point source pollution, environmental health and regulatory reform.
