Gregory Blake Hassell, a senior from Williamston, NC was the NC State recipient of the PGA Paul Runyan Scholarship in the amount of $2500 for the academic year 2006-07. Hassell was one of 10 PGM students selected from various PGM universities across the country.
Inspired by the legacy of one of the game's premier instructors, The PGA of America created the Paul Runyan Collegiate Golf Management Scholarship. This annual award goes to a junior / senior in The PGA's Professional Golf Management program, which is offered at 18 universities or colleges nationwide. Ten $2500 scholarships are awarded and one lucky student receives a $5000 scholarship.
The scholarship's namesake, Paul Runyan, was a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and a two-time winner of the PGA Championship and Senior PGA Championship. Runyan was chosen one of Golf Magazine's Top 50 Teachers. He died at the age of 93.
The Paul Runyan Collegiate Golf Management Scholarship is based on students enrolled in the Professional Golf Management Program; grade point average requirements at their respective university or college; completing the Level I Golf Professional Training Program checkpoint; PGM and community involvement and the submission of a paper discussing the significance of the scholarship bearing Paul Runyan's name. PGM directors at the participating colleges or universities
will nominate candidates who are reviewed by the PGA Scholarship Committee.
