As a land grant institution, NC State is expected to serve the people of North Carolina by sharing knowledge and providing support services to local communities and government agencies. PRTM exemplifies this committment to the greater good through the many extension and outreach activities it makes possible each year.

Outreach Programs
PRTM sponsors the largest recreation technical assistance and professional service program in the U.S., with over (10,000) people certified in the past 30 years through the Oglebay Schools. PRTM also supports a number of statewide recreational programs through the Recreation Resources Service (RRS), which serves recreation providers across the state by aswering over 3,000 requests for technical assistance each year and training more than 1,200 workshop participants annually. In the field of tourism, PRTM plays an important role statewide. Tourism Resources brings together many different types of information to assist N.C. communities in developing their tourism efforts, then links them with valuable programs and other sources of support to help ensure their tourism programs are successful.

Community Leadership
PRTM faculty and students also provide leadership and donate thousands of volunteer hours to make the N.C. Senior Games one of the largest and most successful Senior Games events in the U.S. each year. This same spirit drives the success of PRTM's popular Service Learning activities, which involve dozens of students annually planning and implementing a variety of programs for local parks, community centers and other recreational facilities. Not only does this program provide hands-on learning for students, it helps local organizations make the most of limited staff budgets, provides area residents with programs that enrich their lives and helps create a sense of community between and among NC State and the many neighborhoods it serves.
