Specialty/Current Research Interests

Dr. Moore’s major research and scholarly interests lie in the areas of outdoor recreation and human dimensions of natural resources management. Specialized interests focus on outdoor recreation behavior, trails and greenways, partnerships and volunteerism.

Current Assignment

Dr. Moore conducts research and teaches in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. He had a one-year sabbatical with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) coordinating the Appalachian Trail Environmental MEGA-Transect program in 2008 & 2009.  This one-of-a-kind effort is establishing the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) and the public lands around it as a major environmental monitoring corridor and indicator of the environmental health of the Eastern U.S.  The Appalachian Trail Park Office, ATC, National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program, and other partners will use the A.T. Environmental MEGA-Transect program to monitor, understand and respond to changes in the environment.  See the below link for more information.

Roger is an avid outdoorsman and traveler who spends as much time as possible in the wild.  He is especially fond of the Appalachian Trail and is active in its management, serving on the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Board of Directors from 2005 through 2008.
