The emphasis of the master's of science degree is on leisure and recreation theory and research. This degree requires the in-depth study of an issue or topic in recreation, tourism or sport management.

Students seeking this degree must have an interest in pursuing independent research. This degree is often used as the foundation for continuing graduate studies and obtaining a doctoral degree.

The master's of science program allows each student to develop a plan of study and research that challenges and stimulates, as well as meets their objectives. Working with an advisor, the student selects specific courses and research activities to meet his or her objectives. The general areas of master's coursework provided by the Department include: 

  • park and recreation management
  • tourism policy and development
  • natural resource management 
  • recreational sport management
  • spatial information science
