Spatial Information Science is a relatively new field where practical geographic knowledge, cartography and computer technology converge. Using aerial or satellite imagery plus computer mapping and state of the art data measuring and retrieval methods, geospatial sciences can help PRTM professionals monitor and measure the impact of usage patterns and land or conservation strategies on a myriad number of factors, revealing heretofore unknown implications about specific parks, tourism and recreation practices. Today, geospatial sciences is it a rapidly-growing field that offers tremendous career opportunities for skilled individuals. PRTM’s geographic sciences focus is to provide training in remote sensing, spatial and geographic information systems plus a host of other related topics such as computer science skills, geography, engineering, business and marketing. These academic programs benefit students who are interested in either pursuing careers in the more technical aspects of parks, recreation and tourism management or who want to augment their traditional hands-on PRTM skills with knowledge of this important field. PRTM also continues to pioneer new practices in geospatial sciences through its renowned research efforts in this area, and to offer extension and outreach programs that educate professionals on the capabilities now open to them through the geospatial sciences.
