Golfing is one of the most popular sports in the world. Estimates put the total number of golfers in the U.S. at more than 27.3 million and the number of private and public golf courses at over 16,000. Each year, the golf industry funnels over a billion dollars into North Carolina’s economy, with a single major tournament bringing as much as $100 million into a local community. Golf also accounts for a huge percentage of tourist traffic in the state, and is one of the most popular recreational pursuits for N.C. residents, who enjoy playing on award-winning public and private courses in all of the state’s regions, from the Outer Banks and other coastal areas to the renowned Sandhills — consistently ranked as the #1 golf destination on the East Coast — the Piedmont, and the mountains.
NC State serves this key leisure industry by preparing professionals in this field and conducting research or offering outreach services in all areas of golf management — including turfgrass management; retail, food, beverage and personnel management; finance; marketing; customer services; and golf instruction. PRTM is a key component of the University’s golf industry efforts, thanks to its faculty experts and resources in golf management teaching, research and extension.
