PRTM home : Parks

Parks are a vital tradition of America life and are treasured by millions of U.S. citizens. They preserve our natural resources and open spaces, bring history to life, conserve our wildlife and natural wonders, support recreational lands for all to enjoy and provide a way to share our natural treasures with youth while passing on the principles of stewardship and responsibility to new generations. Today, there are 58 official national parks and hundreds more national park locations, plus more than 200 state parks in all 50 states and countless local parks for the public to enjoy.

North Carolina is home to more than its fair share of parks, including the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Cape Lookout National Park, Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It also operates more than 30 state parks and maintains hundreds of historical sites. These destinations attract millions of tourists to the state each year while providing North Carolina residents with recreational outlets and hundreds of square miles of natural beauty. They also create fulfilling career opportunities for many PRTM graduates each year.

PRTM supports this American tradition of healthy and abundant parklands by producing committed, well-trained professionals who have the skills they need to help manage and improve park systems. In educating future leaders, PRTM degrees provide students with an understanding of the principles and techniques that go into planning, developing, and managing recreational and park areas, including the social, biological and physical sciences behind sound land use planning and management. PRTM also conducts research that benefits the parks system and sponsors a variety of outreach and extension services to help the public and park operators stay up-to-date on developments in this field.
