Recreation
PRTM home : Recreation

Americans lead busy lives. They work hard — and they like to play hard, too. The growth of recreational outlets and activities has been immense over the past 50 years, keeping pace with a growing interest by our society in keeping fit, reducing stress, leading a more balanced life and interacting with others in their communities.

Today, recreational choices are available through any number of outlets, including public recreational facilities and community centers, maintained by local governments and agencies; private facilities operated for profit; special events staged by associations and population-specific organizations; and even vacation programs and tourism offerings centered around recreation. The breadth of available recreational activities has also expanded. People are seeking ways to play individual and team sports, hike, swim, picnic, bike, fish, hunt, canoe, camp, dance, do arts and crafts, play or simply gather together and relax.

PRTM degrees support the thriving recreational movement by offering students instruction in all of the skills needed to design, implement and evaluate successful recreational programs that improve communities and the quality of life for recreational participants. PRTM also conducts research into the effects of recreation on the well-being of people and communities, uncovers new ways to maximize resources and enrich activities and helps measure the economic impact of recreation on local areas. It also conducts service learning activities and other outreach programs to spread best practices in recreation across the state and nation and keep industry standards high.
