Curriculum

The Online Professional Master’s Degree in Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Sport Management is designed to meet the needs of busy professionals and students with active lifestyles. Our accelerated course format compresses traditional on-campus courses into a eight-week schedule, allowing students to enroll in one course at a time and still complete all degree requirements in two years. Students must complete 22 credit hours of required courses and 9 credit hours of electives (31 credit hours total) to graduate.

Course Structure

Like traditional on-campus classes, our online courses have start and end dates according to the college’s calendar. Your professor will provide a course schedule for you to follow along with dates and deadlines for assignments. All courses require weekly virtual real-time class meetings and include a combination of recorded lectures, electronic discussion forums, assigned readings, and independent and group assignments.

Courses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the entire semester. Most course activity occurs over a seven day period, allowing you the flexibility to participate when you have the time. But a particular course may require that you log on at certain periods for certain activities. Students should plan on at least three hours of course work per week per credit hour. Characteristics of a successful student include:

  • Excellent time management skills
  • Self-motivation
  • Ability to learn on their own
  • Commitment to their education

Virtual Real-Time Class Meetings

All courses require weekly virtual real-time class meetings with your instructor and classmates via Zoom. These meetings are typically scheduled on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings, from approximately 7:30 to 9 p.m. Topics will vary from course to course but typically include a review of weekly readings, lecture and threaded discussions. Additional elements may include brief lectures from faculty or guest speakers, group activities and student presentations.
