Tourism and commercial recreationprepares students to enter the thriving travel and tourism industries by offering them instruction in all aspects of this field, from product development to marketing, facility management, finance and more. Core courses include:
- Convention and Visitor Services
- Resort Management and Operations
- Managerial Accounting
- Special Events Planning
- Services, Facilities and Event Marketing
Many students in this area also minor in Business Management by completing a few additional courses.
Teaching Focus
PRTM’s staff of travel and tourism experts concentrate on helping students develop a practical understanding of theory, providing extensive hands-on field experiences, building confidence in each student’s ability to assume a diverse array of positions within tourism and travel and instilling a commitment in all students to industry education and high standards. Students also learn the importance of the social, economic and environmental impact that tourism development can have on an area.
Careers
This concentration prepares students for jobs related to planning, developing, marketing and managing tourism facilities, attractions and products. The positions could be with private companies, nonprofit groups or public agencies. Recent graduates have gone on to enjoy successful careers with state and local tourism promotion offices, with resorts, travel and tour operators, at a wide variety of tourist and recreational attractions and with special events organizations.
