NC State’s Department of Wood & Paper Science (WPS) offers a variety of wood science, paper science and biomaterials analysis and testing services to industry professionals, companies and communities. Services include those related to:

Wet End Chemistry & Additives

Test facilities are available for routine analyses related to the effects of papermaking chemical additives. Complete instructions should be provided by the requester regarding the conditions of testing, e.g. fiber type, pH, salt concentrations, time durations, number of replicate tests, etc. The following equipment is available:

• Dynamic Drainage / Retention Jar (Britt Jar) tests can be performed to compare retention aid effectiveness, effects of hydrodynamic shear on retention, and fines fractionation.
• Streaming current detector, Mütek PCD03 pH, is commonly used as the endpoint detector for determination of cationic demand and for analyzing the charge densities of polyelectrolyte samples.
• Zeta potential effects can be evaluated by means of a Lazer Zee instrument, helping to understand conditions under which particles in suspension will be attracted or repelled from surfaces due to electrostatic forces.
• TAPPI handsheets can be prepared according to TAPPI Test T205, or according to modified methods specified in the request.
• Canadian Standard Freeness tests can be carried out according to TAPPI method T227.
