WPS Home : For Future Undergrads : Student Profiles

Doug Mehlenbacher

Major(s): PSE and CHE
Year: Sophomore:
Hometown: Jacksonville, NC
After I graduate: Travel for a year or so and then ultimately work in a mill doing something awesome!
What I like best about WPS: The small classes and how tight we all are, the crazy amount of jobs out there for us, and all the opportunities to do whatever I want with college.
Advice: Don't you dare count out paper as something boring and redneck until you step foot in a mill and experience 10 things going on at once!

Jessica Rogers

Major(s): Paper Science and Engineering (Plan to later Double in Chemical Engineering)
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Greensboro,NC
After I graduate: I don't really know what I want to do after I graduate. I either want to work for the U.S Treasury and make paper money...or I want to get my master's degree and do research.
What I like best about WPS: I love how all of the WPS faculty and staff truly care about you and will try their best to help you  succeed while you are at NC State and even after you graduate.
Advice: The advice I would give to someone considering NC State and the Dept. of Wood and Paper Science is to try the program out! There is no other department like it on NC State's campus. They take care of you and this is an important quality a department should have when you go to a school as large as State, you want to feel as if you belong.

Dane Ashton Grismer

Student Dane Grismer on a mountainMajor(s): PSE/CHE
Year: Senior
Hometown: Monroe, NC
After I graduate: I plan to attend Grad School and do research
What I like best about WPS: Hands-on approach to learning, practical/focused subject matter, great interaction with professors, and most: PAPER INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE!!!
Advice: Set your priorities before doing anything by figuring out what is most important to you. When considering NCSU and PSE, ask yourself if you're ready for a challenge, if you're ready to work hard, if you're ready for great opportunities, and if you want to have fun?

Genevieve Pike

Major(s): Paper Science & Engineering and Chemical Engineering with either a Biomolecular Concentration or a minor in Business Managment or both
Year: I am a second year student.
Hometown: Wilson, NC
After I graduate: What I want to do after I graduate tends to change everyday.  I have thought about graduate school or pursuing an MBA.  As of today, I would like to work in sales probably as a supplier to the paper industry.
What I like best about WPS:
I like how small the WPS program is.  I know most of my classmates and I know a lot of people in the program both older and younger than me.  I have made really good friends through the paper science department.
Advice: Get to know your classmates because they make excellent study partners in all your classes, including WPS.  And have fun!

Desmond Lowery

Major(s): Wood Products & Business Managment
Year: Senior Yr.
Hometown: Winston-Salem
After I graduate: I hope to pursue a career in wood products and through hard work and focus become a major part of a wood products organization.
What I like best about WPS:
I think it's a tossup between the awesome staff and the personal experience you get while in the classroom.
Advice: I would tell them first to consider what you want to get out of a college education, whether it be just a degree or an actual experience inside and outside of the classroom. I'd also say that they would love the staff and how loveable they are along with the fact that the small class sizes help you to learn and retain lots of information. On top of all this you get an education from professors who love their jobs and want to make you love your major! Not to mention the 100 percent job placement with starting jobs ranging from 50,000-70,000 a year. There isn't an unbeatable experience.

Matthew Holland Cagle

Major(s): My major is Wood Products with a concentration in Industrial Engineering
Year: I am a senior
Hometown: Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina
After I graduate: I am not sure what I would like to do after graduation. Maybe make particle board, OSB, or something along those lines.
What I like best about WPS: What I like about the program is the people that are associated with the program. Because of the program size, you get a chance to build good relationships with the professors and everyone else involved. Everyone involved with the program are good people who do there best to prepare you for the future and try to help you to the best of their ability.
Advice: I would tell them that it is a great idea but just like any other program, it will take hard work and a genuine interest in the field.
