Undergraduate Research

WPS Home : For Future Undergrads : Undergraduate Research

Hands-on research and inquiry-driven instruction is an important part of the education we provide in NC State’s Department of Wood & Paper Science. Both our Wood Products and our Paper Science & Engineering students are encouraged to tackle real-world problems and to explore actual industry settings as they work in our on-site laboratories, side-by-side with faculty on faculty research projects or while participating in co-ops and internships with industry employers.

PSE Research Opportunities

The Paper Science & Engineering program offers undergraduates the opportunity to take part in research programs involving pulping and bleaching chemistry, fiber recycling, environmental engineering, fiber physics, wood and wet-end chemistry and related areas of forest biomaterials. Close cooperation with the Chemical Engineering Department at NC State also provides strong engineering research opportunities for those students interested in this aspect of the pulp and paper industry.

Wood Products Research Opportunities

Our Wood Products group concentrates on research that examines the systematic anatomy of wood species, physical and mechanical properties of wood or wood-based products and their processing.
Specific areas of research explore drying efficiency, wood-moisture relations, novel drying technologies, modeling of wood structures and connections, design of wood structural systems, relationships between anatomy and wood properties, computer-aided wood identification, wood science, wood machining and tooling research, building mechanics and recycling.
