Orlando Rojas

Dr. Orlando Rojas is Associate Professor in the Department of Wood & Paper Science at North Carolina State University. Prior to joining NCSU, he spent several years as a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering in Universidad de Los Andes (Venezuela). His career has been devoted to the area of interfacial phenomena, surface and colloid chemistry.

Dr. Rojas comes from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH, Stockholm) where he pursued postdoctoral studies in the Department of Chemistry, Physical Chemistry after obtaining his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University.

His group use techniques involving the measurement of interaction forces and adhesion as well as the viscoelasticity of adsorbed monolayers. Current research is focused on adhesion in model cellulose surfaces; adsorption of synthetic and natural polymers on fibers (by ellipsometry, reflectometry and AFM), electrospinning of biopolymers and, the separation, derivatization and use of lignin as polymeric surfactant. Current projects include Structure-Property Relations in Amphoteric Polymers for Non-Food Fiber Applications; High-Performance Composite Biomaterials via Surface Grafting; Boundary Lubrication and Molecular Assembly in Fiber Processing; Enzyme Activity via Piezoelectric Sensors and Advanced Pathogen Detection in Food Matrices.

Dr. Rojas maintains active research collaborations worldwide and is the current Program Chair of the Cellulose and Renewable Materials Division of the American Chemical Society.
