Scholarship Luncheon…

NC State faculty, students, and donors gathered in the McKimmon Center for the College of Natural Resources Scholarship Luncheon on Friday, February 23, 2018. Scholarship recipients were seated with their benefactors to allow an opportunity to mingle and learn about each other’s unique experiences. A number of NC State Paper Science and Engineering students are supported by private donations facilitated by the Natural Resources Foundation, and events like the Luncheon are NC State’s way of thanking those who so generously fund our students’ educations.

Students were encouraged to take a photo with their scholarship donor(s). Pictured is a group of NC State College of Natural Resources students with their benefactor, Dr. Martin Hubbe.

Success starts from the Professors

Dr. Hubbe (pictured third from the right) co-founded the BioResources Journal, an online peer-reviewed journal that focuses on the science and engineering of lignocellulosic materials, chemicals, and their applications for new uses and capabilities. The Bioresources journal helps provides many scholarships for College of Natural Resources students.

Brooke Orr (pictured second from the right) is a junior who’s experience at NC State has been positively affected by Dr. Hubbe. Before she started her freshman year, she was a part of the Paper Super Scholars event. She was able to meet some professors and partake in multiple interviews, and received the BioResources Scholarship for out of state students.“This scholarship has helped me immensely in my college career  by allowing me to continue my education with less of a financial burden,” says Orr. “It is also very important to me that my professors want to see their students succeed and set up the scholarship funds to do so.”

Dr. Hubbe…walks the talk

Dr. Hubbe has also been a positive resource for Brooke inside the classroom. He taught her PSE 322 – Wet End Chemistry course and “made class so enjoyable. It is very heartening knowing that he is the donor of my scholarship.” He is also her academic advisor, and has helped her navigate which classes to take in order to be successful during her semesters here.

Brendan Tumpey (pictured fourth from right), a freshman in the Paper Science and Engineering program, agrees that the “luncheon was truly a remarkable experience, and it was an honor to meet several donors who make the NC State CNR Scholarships possible.” It also gave him the chance to get to know Dr. Hubbe as a person and a professor, as well as exchange information with the other students. Brendan is also a BioResources scholarship recipient, and says that this scholarship helped him decide to attend NC State and pursue a dual degree with Chemical Engineering. Tumpey adds that “the BioResources Scholarship has allowed him to follow a career path that truly peaks his interest and has incredible job security.”

So, from the students within the College of Natural Resources, thank you, to all of the private donors that provide  the opportunity to pursue our interests! Without your support, the experiences inside and outside of the classroom would not be possible.
