Elijah Gore graduated from NC State in 2012 with a dual degree in Paper Science & Chemical Engineering. We reached out to Elijah to find about his current career, and advice for current students.  Thanks for sharing Elijah!

Experiences at NC State

  • Internship/co-op experience: CAMCORE, Raleigh, NC. Internship October 2007-July 2008, Buckman laboratories, Riegelwood, NC. Co-op January 2009-July 2009
Ecolab, Greensboro, NC. Internship May 2010-August 2010, KapStone Paper, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Internship May 2011-August 2011; May 2012-August 2012Favorite Class: Senior Design, Organic Chemistry 1, and PSE 360Best memory at State: Staying up late studying in the PSE lounge and Dr. Kelly coming by 1 or 2 in the morning with animal crackers or some other treats. I could count on that at least once a week.Worst memory at State: Having to take CHE 205 for the second time, but if you fail try try again.Clubs/Hobbies: Alpha Phi Alpha, Engaging leaders, CNR Ambassador and PEER Mentor ProgramFavorite part of PSE Program: The close engagement of the faculty. Small cass sizes. Access to free printing makes things easy for students to do school work. The availability of the study lounge 24Hr a day. The hands on labs. Most important thing PSE taught me: How to think! In order to be an engineer you have to have a systematic, logical, and fact based thought process. Without this major I doubt I would have developed this skill set.

Current Career Information

  • Company/job position: Process Engineer III – Pulp and UtilitiesYears at current job: September 2017Favorite part of current job: The operators. The operators make my day. the challenge of interacting with people from different backgrounds, education level, and mindsets. Anyone can make process equipment operate at peak performance, but not everyone can get the most out of a coworker and make them feel valued.Biggest accomplishment in your career: Developing a one on one bond with all my operators. People are what make a company not the equipment.

What other positions have you held

  • What other positions have you had: Kapstone \Paper, Roanoke Rapids: Process Engineer II – Stock Prep, Kapstone Paper, Roanoke Rapids: Process Engineer II – Pulp and Utilities and
Kapstone Paper, Roanoke Rapids: Process Manager I -Pulp and Utilities

What is your advise for current students

  • Focus on controls and statistics. Those areas are growing more and more as companies become leaner and leaner.
