FB Graduate Student Seminar Series: Repurposing Waste Disposable Paper Cups: A Sustainable Source for High Value-added Nanocellulose Materials
April 7 | 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Please join us this Thursday, April 7, 2022, to listen to Munmun Basak present on the subject of repurposing waste disposable paper cups.
Significant accumulation due to landfilling of waste has triggered the present study to convert cellulose-rich waste disposable paper cups into high value-added nanocellulose materials. Around 50 billion disposable paper cups are thrown away each year in the US. The majority of disposable paper cups end up in landfills or incinerated, causing significant environmental pollution and economic burden. Successful recycling or upcycling of disposable paper cups will reduce waste accumulation and contribute to environmental stewardship. High amount of cellulose fibers (>90 wt.%) incorporated with a thin layer of polyethylene (PE), wax or other coatings are the main constituents of disposal paper cups. Therefore, the used paper cups can be a promising option as a sustainable source of cellulose-rich feedstock for nanocellulose materials development.
Participation will be via Zoom.
