Zac Guy 2018 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year

The College of Natural Resources is pleased to recognize Zac Guy as our 2018 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Guy, a 2001 graduate in pulp and paper science and technology, leveraged his degree to become a national leader in wood-based green building materials.

“Zac Guy is the embodiment of the College of Natural Resources’ think and do spirit. From starting his first business in his parents’ basement during high school to selling lumber from his dorm room at NC State to founding and growing his business, Appalachian Antique Hardwoods, into the largest grossing reclaimed and recycled wood products company in the world, Zac exemplifies the college’s core principles of ingenuity, entrepreneurship and sustainability,” Dean Mary Watzin said.

As the founder and owner of Appalachian Antique Hardwoods, Guy is responsible for the direction and mission of the company while also seeking new business opportunities. Guy maintains a strong sales presence and uses his connections throughout the country to further grow the company.

With degrees in wood science and chemical engineering, as well as coursework in management and business from NC State University, and postgraduate courses from Harvard University, Guy brings a wealth of business knowledge to Appalachian Antique Hardwoods.  Guy holds certifications in quality, green building, lean manufacturing, sigma methodologies and engineering.

As the recipient of a “Top 40 Young Entrepreneur” award from Business Magazine and a member of the “Top 40 Under 40” business leader list, Guy has keen insights into the business world both regionally and nationally.

Prior to founding Appalachian Antique Hardwoods, Guy led a business unit for a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical manufacturer that generated in excess of $150M in revenue. He also served as the director of quality and manufacturing for industry-leading chemical companies.

Among Guy’s hobbies are outdoor activities, leading ministry groups at his family’s church, running a growing cattle operation with his family, and membership on national boards of directors for various non-profit groups. Married for 15 years to Haley, his college sweetheart, Zac’s family includes three sons, Tucker, Walker and Parker.
