Scott Bradshaw – Class of ’77

Scott Bradshaw graduated from NC State in 1977 with a degree in Pulp and Paper Science  Technology and a minor in Computer Science.  We reached out to Scott to find about his current career, and advice for current students. Thanks for your time and sharing Scott!

Experiences at NC State

  • Internship/co-op experience: Summers of 1973 – 1975: Labor Pool and Lab Assistant, Hudson Pulp and Paper, Palatka, FL (currently GP facility); Summer of 1976: Lab Assistant, Weyerhaeuser Company, Plymouth, NC
  • Best memory at State: Winning the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament in 1974, with David Thompson, Tommy Burleson, Monte Towe, et al! A great time on Hillsborough Street that night!
  • Worst memory at State: Working feverishly in Dr. Reaves’s Color Lab on Election Night, 1976, when Jimmy Carter was elected. In favor of Carter, not so much for Color Lab!
  • Clubs/Hobbies: Music: Glee Club (singer and pianist), Women’s Chorale (pianist), Mu Beta Psi member, Grains of Time member, church pianist and choir director, Circle K (service organization); many, many worthwhile projects during my tenure at NCSU.
  • Favorite Class(s): Computer and Process Control classes, All Hitchings’s classes
  • Favorite part of PSE Program: Laboratories (except aforementioned Color Lab), working together with the other students to make things happen
  • Most important thing PSE taught me: Importance of sticking with something even when it’s hard, and feeling successful when it’s completed well.

Current Career Information

  • Company/job position: Retired
  • Years at current job: Since July 2010
  • Biggest accomplishment in your career: Working with some wonderful people at Weyerhaeuser and being a witness to all. It’s so much fun to do what you love and get paid for it!
  • Favorite part of our current job: Doing my own things as the Lord has guided me!

What other positions have you held

  • June, 1977: Began employment at Weyerhaeuser Company in Plymouth, NC, held many positions in technical department, engineering, and maintenance related to process control and information systems. April, 2006: Began Weyerhaeuser Corporate position in Federal Way, WA for SAP cellulose fiber business conversion. November, 2008: Upon above project completion, began employment at Weyerhaeuser Company facility in Columbus, MS as a process control engineer. Worked in this capacity until retirement.

What is your advise for current students

  • Learn all you can and find your niche in the PSE world. There are so many opportunities out there! One is just right for your gifts and talents.

Personal Information

  • Hometown: Palatka, FL
  • Family: August, 1978: Married the former Mary Kay Allsbrook from Scotland Neck, NC, who graduated from Meredith College in 1977 with a BA in psychology and education.  June, 1984: Son Justin Michael born, eventually attended NCSU and received BS and Ph. D degrees in biology and microbiology. March, 1989: Daughter Meredith Brooke born, eventually attended NCSU and received BS in zoology and MS in science education
  • Hobbies/interests: Music: Church music director and pianist for the Methodist and Baptist churches in Plymouth, NC; teach music and theater arts to PK-sixth grades students at Lawrence Academy in Merry Hill, NC; perform Broadway and other shows as the pianist.
