Why did you choose  Paper Science and Engineering (PSE)?

  • Initially, I was drawn in by the fact that the recent graduating class at the time had 100% job placement, but what really sold me was when I did a tour of the Pulp and Paper Labs. On the tour, Mrs. Piercy told me that in your sophomore year you take a course where you go through the entire pulping process, starting with debarking and ending with bleached pulp, and I’m not too sure why but that really hooked me and I left the tour knowing that this is what I want to do.

What is your favorite thing about Paper Science and Engineering?

  • I love the family atmosphere of PSE and how much the professors and faculty care about their students. The best example that comes to mind is, last semester there was a tornado warning and Dr. Byrd immediately sent out an email to all the students to make sure we were aware and to know where our nearest tornado shelter was.

What is your favorite thing about NC State?

  • My favorite thing about NC State would have to be Howling Cow!

What advice would you offer to an incoming freshman?

  • Join TAPPI and become an active member! I would say to use all the resources that are given to you through TAPPI and through the program. Also don’t be afraid to travel far for a co-op or internship and volunteer to help out Paula and Jennifer whenever you can!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

  • This past fall I had the chance to study abroad in Jyväskylä, Finland and while over there I was able to spend a week hiking in Poland alone! I was able to hike the tallest mountain in Poland, it was an amazing experience!

Who has been your favorite Professor or Staff?

  • I’d have to say my favorite staff member is Mrs. Harrod! I had the chance to be an assistant for the Pulp and Paper Short Course this past spring and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without Mrs. Harrod’s help and guidance!
