Robert “Bob” Buckman was a true innovator in the specialty chemical world, he changed the model for service and action in the pulp and paper and other industries. Bob knew what most did not years ago, that paper mills did not have enough bandwidth and technical expertise to solve most of their chemistry problems. Papermaking was still an art in the 80’s and 90’s and Bob embarked on a business model that enjoined Buckman’s expertise into the mill’s fabric of operation and helped the industry become the science it is today. It was a master stroke of organizational brilliance and benefitted the mills and Buckman Laboratories. 

More than his accomplishments within industry, Bob was a model of humanitarianism and giving back. Certainly the gifts to NC State that both he and his family have helped shepard benefit the PSE program every day. We have a student working in Finland this summer, in part because of the Stanley Buckman endowment. The Buckman Distinguished Professorship helps fund activities and research for the present holder, Dr. Martin Hubbe. His profound impact will not be forgotten.
