ABET, Inc., is the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology. Because maintaining accreditation requires comprehensive periodic evaluations, ABET accreditation demonstrates our continuing commitment to the quality of our program.

Program Educational Objectives / Student Outcomes

Within a few years after graduation, alumni of the Paper Science & Engineering Program at NC State University will be:

  • Effective engineers and leaders in the paper, chemical process, and related industries.
  • Professionals who act in a safe and ethical manner.
  • Lifelong learners who pursue opportunities to continue their education.

To achieve these objectives, students are expected to meet the following learning outcomes during the course of the curriculum:

Objective A1.   An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics

Objective A2.   An ability to apply knowledge of science and engineering

Objective B.   An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as analyze and interpret the data

Objective C.   An ability to design a system, component or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability

Objective D. An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams

Objective E. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems

Objective F.   An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility

Objective G. An ability to communicate effectively

Objective H.   The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context

Objective I.   A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in lifelong learning

Objective J. A knowledge of contemporary issues

Objective K. An ability to practice the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
