Hands-on research and inquiry-driven instruction are important parts of the education we provide at NC State’s Department of Forest Biomaterials. Our students in Sustainable Materials and Technology and Paper Science & Engineering programs tackle real-world problems and explore actual industry settings as they work in our on-site laboratories, side-by-side with faculty on faculty research projects. Many students participate in co-ops and internships with industry employers.
PSE Research Opportunities
The Paper Science & Engineering program offers undergraduates the opportunity to take part in research programs involving pulping and bleaching chemistry, fiber recycling, biomaterials, bioenergy, environmental engineering, fiber physics, wood and wet-end chemistry and other related areas of forest biomaterials.
Close cooperation with the Chemical Engineering Department at NC State also provides strong engineering research opportunities for students interested in that aspect of the pulp and paper industry.
Sustainable Materials Research Opportunities
Our Sustainable Materials and Technology program concentrates on research that examines resilient housing and indoor air quality, the physical and mechanical properties of wood or wood-based composites, biopower and wood pellets, computer-aided wood identification, consumer perceptions of biobased products, and the processing and machining of biobased composites.
