{"id":11695,"date":"2017-12-04T10:20:38","date_gmt":"2017-12-04T15:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/fb\/?page_id=11695"},"modified":"2025-06-01T21:42:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T01:42:37","slug":"facilities-and-services","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/fb\/facilities-and-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Facilities and Services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Ecosystem Built for Solutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Forest Biomaterials boasts a one-ton on-campus recycling facility and two major laboratory complexes that emulate state-of-the-art industry conditions in both the wood products and paper science sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biltmore Hall is our main building with nearly<strong> 83,000 square feet of teaching and extension space,<\/strong> including numerous laboratories devoted to wood, forest biomaterials, and paper science and engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Hodges Wood Products Laboratory<\/strong> is a 21,000-square-foot facility that contains a range of production woodworking equipment, testing machines and instrumentation for investigating the characterization, physical and mechanical properties of wood, forest biomaterials and energy products, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dry kilns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CNC routers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finishing room<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four universal and several other testing machines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conditioning chambers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Woodworking equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hot presses for making plywood, particleboard and&nbsp;fiberboard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Robertson Pulp and Paper Laboratory Complex<\/strong> includes research facilities and equipment, plus a new three-story lab addition. The Paper and Pulp Testing Laboratory is home to the fully-functioning, reduced-scale Baby Wolfpack <strong>pilot paper plant<\/strong>, and houses specialized paper testing, recycling and pulping facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our<strong> Forest Biomaterials and Bioenergy Laboratories<\/strong> accommodate a variety of research equipment, including an array of chemical analysis laboratories, <strong>two high-field NMRs<\/strong> and a multitude of surface characterization tools.
