Each month, the Environmental Sciences Academic Program highlights a current student who represent the diverse and involved student population within the program. This month, March, the spotlight focuses on, Tyler Rohrbach.
Name: Tyler Rohrbach
Focal Area: Marine Science
1. What lead you to select Environmental Sciences at NC State?
I selected Environmental Science coming out of high school in large part because I have always been passionate about protecting the environment. Selecting a major that could lead to a green career was a major influence for me.
2. What is your favorite aspect about the Environmental Science program?a
My favorite part of the ES program has to be how personal it is. The support from the faculty such as Greg Wilson and Dr. Winner, is incredible. Every time I meet with Greg he’s so helpful and genuine. He’s helped me a tremendous amount and I’m sure many others in the ES program feel the same way.
3. What has been your favorite course at NC State?
My favorite course at NC State has probably been Physics I (PY211). I really loved Dr. Heyward’s lecture style and learned a lot in the class. The material was really interesting and the demonstrations were pretty awesome to see.
4. How did you select your focal area (if selected)?
During my Sophomore year I picked up Marine Science as a double major. The flexibility of the Environmental Science program allowed me to use my Marine Science classes as my focal area, which doesn’t set me behind at all for graduation.
5. What is something you wish someone had told you when you were a freshman?
Hmm this is a tough one. Probably to appreciate college as much as you can because it goes by VERY quickly. Try to experience as many things as possible and to meet as many people as you can.
6. What is your favorite thing to do outside of the classroom?
I’m really into sports so I love playing Intramurals or watching State athletics, though this basketball season has been a little rough. Spending a Fall afternoon tailgating and cheering on the Pack in Carter-Finley is heaven on Earth.
