Geospatial Forum with Dr. Julian Agyeman

October 3, 2019 @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Join us for a special Geospatial Forum and panel presentation event:“Just Sustainabilities and the Future of North Carolina: how does who can belong determine what the state can become?”

Julian Agyeman of Tufts University will first present “Just Sustainabilities in Policy, Planning and Practice,” outlining his concept of “just sustainabilities”––the full integration of social justice and sustainability, defined as “the need to ensure a better quality of life for all, now and into the future, in a just and equitable manner, whilst living within the limits of supporting ecosystems.” He will then give practical examples from his recent research into urban planning and design, food justice, sharing cities and planning for intercultural cities.

Dr. Agyeman’s presentation will be directly followed by a chain reaction panel exploring, among other topics, the opportunities for (and limitations of) geospatial sciences to advance social justice and sustainability, and the potential for geospatial sciences to help resolve tensions between social justice and sustainability. The panelists include:

Dara Bloom –– Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, NC State

Louie Rivers –– Assistant Professor, Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, College of Natural Resources, NC State

Eleni Bardaka –– Assistant Professor, Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering, NC State
