{"id":12127,"date":"2019-09-17T10:46:40","date_gmt":"2019-09-17T14:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/?p=12127"},"modified":"2025-02-21T14:58:58","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T19:58:58","slug":"forum-social-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/news\/2019\/09\/17\/forum-social-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Geospatial Forum to Explore Social Justice and Sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p>On October 3, 2019, North Carolina State University will host renowned critical urban planning and environmental social science scholar and author <a href=\"https:\/\/julianagyeman.com\/\"><u>Julian Agyeman<\/u><\/a> to present his work at the intersection of social justice and sustainability, followed by a panel discussion, Q&amp;A session and book signing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event \u2013\u2013 \u201cJust Sustainabilities and the Future of North Carolina: How Does <em>Who<\/em> Can Belong Determine <em>What<\/em> the State Can Become?\u201d <em>\u2013\u2013<\/em> will take place in room 4106 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.ncsu.edu\/huntlibrary\"><u>James B. Hunt Jr. Library<\/u><\/a> on NC State\u2019s Centennial Campus. Agyeman\u2019s presentation is entitled \u201cJust Sustainabilities in Policy, Planning and Practice\u201d and will begin at 3:30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agyeman is a professor of urban and environmental policy and planning at Tufts University. He is the originator of the increasingly influential concept of \u201cjust sustainabilities,\u201d conceptualized as the full integration of social justice and sustainability, and which he defines as \u201cthe need to ensure a better quality of life for all, now and into the future, in a just and equitable manner, whilst living within the limits of supporting ecosystems.\u201d In his talk, Agyeman will discuss the concept of just sustainabilities and provide practical examples from his recent research into urban planning and design, food justice, and planning for intercultural cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A chain reaction panel discussion will follow the presentation<em>, <\/em>exploring, among other topics, the opportunities for (and limitations of) geospatial sciences to advance social justice and sustainability, and the potential for geospatial sciences to help resolve tensions between social justice and sustainability.
