{"id":18359,"date":"2022-12-15T14:43:22","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T19:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/?p=18359"},"modified":"2024-01-19T10:33:05","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T15:33:05","slug":"gis-service-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/news\/2022\/12\/15\/gis-service-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"GIS Service Learning to Support Public Lands, First Responders, City Planning and More"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before graduating, each student in the Center for Geospatial Analytics\u2019 professional master\u2019s program in Geospatial Information Science and Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/online-distance.ncsu.edu\/program\/master-of-geospatial-information-science-and-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MGIST<\/a>) applies their knowledge and skills to a client-supplied problem in a <a href=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/news\/tag\/service-learning\/\">service-learning<\/a> capstone project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry, academic, government and nonprofit partners work closely with our students to find a customized solution using GIS applications and geospatial analysis. This semester, two MGIST students worked to support the NPS\u2019s mission in the Southeast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Brendan Simms<\/strong> partnered with NPS staff at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/pete\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Petersburg National Battlefield<\/a> in Virginia to identify the potential locations of undiscovered Civil War artifacts and evaluate barriers to acquiring the lands that contain them. Petersburg National Battlefield has \u201crecently been given an opportunity to expand their park,\u201d Simms explained, \u201cand so they need help identifying what lands would be helpful to their story to expand and preserve.\u201d The web map he developed incorporates the locations and typical range of artillery used during a series of 1865 battles called the Picket Line Assault, as well as displays the locations of contemporary buildings and the current owners and values of land parcels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Paige Yelen<\/strong> worked with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Western Carolina University<\/a> Archaeology GIS Laboratory to support protection of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/trte\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Trail of Tears National Historic Trail<\/a>. \u201cThe Trail of Tears refers to routes taken during the forced removal of Native peoples from their homeland in the southeastern United States to Indian Territory in what is now known as Oklahoma during the early to mid-19<sup>th<\/sup> century,\u201d Yelen explained. Portions of the trail are currently unknown due to a lack of historical maps and documents. Photo by Elijah Mears \/ Unsplash.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One objective of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/raleighnc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">City of Raleigh<\/a>\u2019s Strategic Plan is to better understand the impacts of transportation projects on residents. <strong>Deirdre (Dee) An<\/strong> partnered with the City to determine which areas were likely burdened by past projects. \u201cOne of the main things they wanted to accomplish was to map the demographics and variables that could indicate, or be related to, a burden by a past transportation investment,\u201d she explained. Combining demographic, health and road data, she developed \u201ca suitability score showing where in Wake County would be the most and least burden on a scale from one to five\u201d; she also created a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/6cdf99b9cf5b47ffbc558eaf005aea74\" target=\"_blank\">story map<\/a> to detail her findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To support future planning by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpsnc.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Durham Public Schools<\/a> as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/engage.dpsnc.net\/growing-together-regions-programs-and-boundaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Growing Together<\/a> project, <strong>Randy Johnson<\/strong> developed a web mapping application that displays the demographics of neighborhoods served by the school system\u2019s different facilities. Using a socioeconomic index he created, planners can also better understand which areas are disadvantaged versus advantaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arborday.org\/programs\/treecityusa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tree City USA<\/a>\u201d designation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matthewsnc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Town of Matthews<\/a> cares about maintaining its abundant tree cover. <strong>Jeremy Davis<\/strong> partnered with the Town\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matthewsnc.gov\/pview.aspx?id=20707&amp;catid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Appearance\/Tree Advisory Committee<\/a> to develop tools for assessing canopy health and coverage over time, collecting new data about individual trees, and calculating needs for new plantings to compensate for trees unavoidably lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Infrastructure like pipes and cables buried underground can be vulnerable to damage by plant roots that grow deep enough to penetrate them. <strong>Michael Mirolli<\/strong> worked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofws.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">City of Winston-Salem<\/a> to identify locations where vegetation growth may someday pose a problem for city infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"campus\">Improving NC State\u2019s Campus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/12\/BK-13820-500x281-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/12\/BK-13820-500x281-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/12\/BK-13820-500x281-1-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aerial view of Centennial Campus. Whether and how the site could include another nine holes, though, remained an open question. Working with <a href=\"https:\/\/realestate.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NC State Real Estate and Development<\/a>, <strong>Alexis (Lexi) Thomas<\/strong> gathered data about the course and its environs, as well as input from the Capital Area Disc League Facebook group, to perform a suitability analysis and draft a potential new design. \u201cWhen you are doing a project <em>for<\/em> the people, you should talk <em>to<\/em> the people,\u201d Thomas said. Photo by Studio Kealaula \/ Unsplash.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ryan Held<\/strong> worked with the healthcare design firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsalifestructures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BSA LifeStructures<\/a> to identify and characterize the service areas of healthcare facilities operated by one of its clients, Bassett Healthcare Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mary Hughes<\/strong> developed a workflow using open-source software to help the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/ntbg.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Tropical Botanical Garden<\/a> maintain its tens of thousands of plant records for its research and conservation gardens in Hawaii and Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yajie Liu<\/strong> partnered with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US Geological Survey<\/a> to support quality control of data generated by contractors for the new Elevation-Derived Hydrography dataset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hanna Swartz<\/strong> worked with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdps.gov\/our-organization\/emergency-management\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina Emergency Management<\/a> to spread the word about statewide LiDAR data that are available for use in a range of applications. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/30cf2f0d40c04467957f3586c8f983b1\" target=\"_blank\">story map<\/a> she created details how the data were collected and how to use them. Combining demographic, health and road data, she developed \u201ca suitability score showing where in Wake County would be the most and least burden on a scale from one to five\u201d; she also created a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/6cdf99b9cf5b47ffbc558eaf005aea74\" target=\"_blank\">story map<\/a> to detail her findings.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>To support future planning by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpsnc.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Durham Public Schools<\/a> as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/engage.dpsnc.net\/growing-together-regions-programs-and-boundaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Growing Together<\/a> project, <strong>Randy Johnson<\/strong> developed a web mapping application that displays the demographics of neighborhoods served by the school system\u2019s different facilities. Using a socioeconomic index he created, planners can also better understand which areas are disadvantaged versus advantaged.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>With its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arborday.org\/programs\/treecityusa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tree City USA<\/a>\u201d designation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matthewsnc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Town of Matthews<\/a> cares about maintaining its abundant tree cover. <strong>Jeremy Davis<\/strong> partnered with the Town\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matthewsnc.gov\/pview.aspx?id=20707&amp;catid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Appearance\/Tree Advisory Committee<\/a> to develop tools for assessing canopy health and coverage over time, collecting new data about individual trees, and calculating needs for new plantings to compensate for trees unavoidably lost.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Infrastructure like pipes and cables buried underground can be vulnerable to damage by plant roots that grow deep enough to penetrate them. <strong>Michael Mirolli<\/strong> worked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofws.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">City of Winston-Salem<\/a> to identify locations where vegetation growth may someday pose a problem for city infrastructure.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"align\":\"right\"} -->\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 id=\"campus\">Improving NC State\u2019s Campus<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":18392,\"sizeSlug\":\"full\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/12\/BK-13820-500x281-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18392\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aerial view of Centennial Campus. Whether and how the site could include another nine holes, though, remained an open question. Working with <a href=\"https:\/\/realestate.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NC State Real Estate and Development<\/a>, <strong>Alexis (Lexi) Thomas<\/strong> gathered data about the course and its environs, as well as input from the Capital Area Disc League Facebook group, to perform a suitability analysis and draft a potential new design. \u201cWhen you are doing a project <em>for<\/em> the people, you should talk <em>to<\/em> the people,\u201d Thomas said. Based on disc golfer feedback and mapping buffer distances from features like streets, trails and marshy areas, she drafted a design capable of accommodating 18 disc golf holes, including four &gt;400 feet from tee to basket.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Two other MGIST students worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/facilities.ofa.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NC State University Facilities<\/a> and its GIS Administrator, MGIST alum Laurel Krynock, to support the division\u2019s mission of overseeing planning, construction and maintenance of the university\u2019s physical infrastructure. <strong>Ashley Belwolff<\/strong> developed a web mapping application that will help staff inventory and maintain campus trees. \u201cThe purpose of this project was to expand and improve the database that was already existing from years ago, enable mobile field collection for groundskeepers, and create a proximity analysis tool to see the trees\u2019 distance to high-traffic areas,\u201d she explained. <strong>Patrick Williams<\/strong> developed a decision-support tool that can help decision-makers evaluate the best locations for future electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"align\":\"right\"} -->\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 id=\"more\">And More!<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":18395,\"sizeSlug\":\"full\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/geospatial\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/12\/studio-kealaula-ezZ9GSyc3bU-unsplash-500x281-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18395\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hawaiian breadfruit. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/30cf2f0d40c04467957f3586c8f983b1\" target=\"_blank\">story map<\/a> she created details how the data were collected and how to use them.
