Description

The Southern Blue Ridge Conservation Forester serves in a technical leadership role for The Nature Conservancy within the Southern Blue Ridge Program of the North Carolina Chapter. This position is based in our Asheville office and works across the Southern Blue Ridge ecoregion on landscape-scale forest restoration with both public and private partners. The Conservation Forester will identify and address barriers to ecological forest restoration, and work to address priority issues through implementation of demonstration projects. This position will advance our program in applied forest ecology and silviculture across a variety of ownerships with the region. The position reports to the Southern Blue Ridge Program Director and is funded for three-years with the possibility of extension based on continued funding. Salary ranges from $45,000-$50,000/year.



 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 


The Conservation Forester is responsible for advancing our work through a variety of programs and projects.


S/he/they will lead the collaborative engagement with US Forest Service on the Nantahala-Pisgah National Forest to build a collaboratively-supported and ecological restoration-focused program of work.
The Conservation Forester will oversee development of a Southern Blue Ridge forest economic analysis to prioritize landscape scale restoration. This will likely include:Leading an internal, multi-state project;
Collecting data across partner jurisdictions;
Analysis and synthesis of data either in-house or via contract;
Soliciting collaborative feedback;
Preparing a final product and sharing it both internally and externally.
The Conservation Forester will engage substantively in our existing Grandfather Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Project. This work may include conducting current forest condition analyses, developing silvicultural prescriptions, and monitoring management effectiveness towards achieving desired future conditions.



 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
 


Engage strategically in existing collaborative efforts to implement forest restoration projects.
Gain cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
Perform tasks with minimal supervision and make independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
Collect and analyze data including GPS data and produce maps using GIS software.
Ensure program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
Assists in conservation properties acquisition with the intention to demonstrate restoration techniques to partners.
Helps design Timber Stand Improvement projects on TNC preserves.
May assist in strategic prescribed fire operations.
Field work is required. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.



 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 


Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with relationship-building and collaboration to work closely with a variety of partners to achieve outcomes.
Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
Experience communicating with excellence in English with the public both in writing and verbally.
Experience using Microsoft Office; Outlook, Word, Excel, GPS and ArcGIS and/or similar applications.
Experience performing physical work outdoors in all conditions.
Must have valid driver's license. Please indicate this certification in your resume.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS


North Carolina Registered Forester preferred and/or equivalent qualifications already in place to pursue registration.
3-5 years’ experience in Southern Appalachian forestry, including writing forest management plans, cruising and selling timber, conducting stand exams and developing silvicultural prescriptions.
Experience applying principles of applied forest ecology and forest economics to decision-making and guiding activities on-the-ground.
Experience translating peer reviewed scientific literature to managers and non-technical audiences.
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
Experience with prescribed fire and invasive species control.
Creativity to develop innovative and novel solutions to management challenges.
Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and climate change adaptation.
