Timberland Appraiser – Blacksburg, VA
About the Position
As a Timberland Appraiser, you will join MB&G's rapidly-growing valuation services business, providing
first-class service to a wide variety of clients including TIMOs, REITs, publicly and privately-held
corporations, family estates, conservation organizations, public agencies, and others. You will be
completing appraisal assignments on forest and other natural resource lands throughout the eastern
U.S. as well as internationally. In addition, you will support acquisition/divestiture due diligence projects,
forest planning projects, market studies, and economic analyses. In this role, you will perform the
following tasks:
ï‚· Appraisal of timberland properties ranging in size up to 500,000 acres or more for a wide variety
of clients and in diverse geographies including Appalachia, the U.S. South, and Lake States.
ï‚· Appraisal of conservation easements.
ï‚· Appraisal of standing timber, assessment of damages from fires, timber theft, etc.
ï‚· Understand and interpret macroeconomic trends and participate in making forecasts.
ï‚· Monitor timber and timberland market trends and track sales activity.
ï‚· Collect, analyze, and maintain information about timberland transactions.
ï‚· Inspect properties and comparable sales.
ï‚· Develop discounted cash flow models using timber harvest scheduling software.
ï‚· Participate in due diligence efforts.
ï‚· Other duties as necessary.
About You
To excel in the position of Timberland Appraiser at MB&G, you need to be a well-rounded forestland
valuation expert possessing strong project management capabilities, a client service mindset and
exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
Skills and Experience
ï‚· Must hold a current certification in one or more states as a Certified General Real Property
Appraiser and have a minimum of two years of experience appraising forest and natural
resources in any region of the U.S. or internationally.
ï‚· Education and/or background in forest management, forest economics, forest operations, or
forest business strongly preferred.
ï‚· Knowledge of Remsoft's Spatial Forest Planning System (Woodstock) software preferred.
ï‚· Some knowledge and skill with growth modeling software (e.g., PMRC, Fastlob, FVS) desirable.
ï‚· Intermediate skills in GIS (Arc/Map, Arc/Info) desirable.
ï‚· Advanced skills in MS Excel and Access.
ï‚· Excellent appraisal report writing skills.
ï‚· Excellent time management skills.
ï‚· Proven ability to multi-task and manage for multiple deadlines.
ï‚· Ability to travel, plan and conduct fieldwork.
ï‚· Enthusiastic and team-oriented.
ï‚· Strong attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
ï‚· Responsive and client service oriented.
Education
ï‚· Bachelor’s degree in forestry, natural resources or other relevant discipline is strongly preferred.
ï‚· State Certified Real Property Appraiser including all required prerequisite education.
