Description

The primary purpose of the Natural Areas Steward is to assist with the management of approximately 1,100 acres of conservation lands including natural areas, preserves, and parks, and private lands where the North Carolina Botanical Garden Foundation, Inc. holds legal agreements, including conservation easements. The Natural Areas Steward will maintain and enhance the conservation values of these protected properties by on site land management, engaging in restoration and management activities including, but not limited to: seed collection, plant propagation, prescribed burning and mowing, invasive plant control, trail construction and maintenance, conservation easement monitoring, and volunteer supervision. The position will work in coordination with the NCBG Director of Conservation under the supervision of the Natural Areas Manager, and with the support of other team members in the Garden’s Conservation program.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience that demonstrates possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge – Professional knowledge of specific area(s) and ability to keep current with developments and trends in area(s) of expertise, usually acquired through post- secondary education.

Program Management – Ability to coordinate and administer programs, activities, and protocols. Ability to manage resources, monitor activities and assess environmental risks and quality control associated with the program.

Communication – Ability to present information to individuals or groups; ability to deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience. Ability to convey information clearly and concisely to groups or individuals either verbally or in writing to ensure that they understand the information and the message. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others.

Managing Work and Performance – Ability to assign work and to establish work rules and acceptable levels of quality and quantity of work. Ability to review work and evaluate performance of others, and to develop individual’s competencies.

Information/Records Administration – Knowledge of appropriate data collection policy and procedures, filing systems, data management systems, and programs. Ability to compile, assimilate, organize and store printed and electronic information. Ability to review, compile and analyze information to prepare reports.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred – Bachelor’s degree in ecology, botany, natural resource management, or related field and experience with seed collection techniques, plant propagation, land management, and familiarity with the Piedmont flora and ecosystems.
Required Licenses/Certifications
North Carolina Driver License
Special Physical and Mental Requirements
• Must be able to safely lift and move up to 50 lbs.
• Occasional weekend and night work.
• Ability to use small engine (chainsaws, string trimmers), tractors, herbicides.
• Self-motivated, ability to work independently, and strong organizational skills
• Ability to work outdoors, in adverse conditions.
• Ability to become a Certified Prescribed Burner and assume “burn boss” responsibilities.

Budgeted Hiring Range $31,200-$40,000
